Wibbly webcam projects

What is this all about then?
This is a collection of some movies taken with a webcam.
Mostly time-lapsed productions created by taking one frame from a webcam at regular intervals and put into a movie.

Where are they then?
   over here

Why can't I view them?
Its likely you don't have the right codec to view it. A five hour time lapse will take about 1800 to 2000 files and over 40 MB. Put together uncompressed will be easily over 1.5 Gigabytes, hence the need for codecs. You can download a working codec from somewhere like this. although if you're lazy go for K-lite Codec pack or K-lite Mega pack if you're lazy or like me. Or the official download place here.

Thats cool! How do I do one?
You need : a webcam, a computer turned on for a long time, webcam software capable of grabbing frames at regular intervals, space for all of the frames taken, software to put it into a movie. That could be a £30 ($50) camera, Pentium II, 50MB hard drive space, wcapture / WebcamXP, videomach / platypus animator and as a bonus adding music to it with VirtualDub. Then point your camera until you're satisfied, capture, leave it alone for a while, take all your pics and stuff them into videomach, pick a codec and fiddle with fps, bitrate, compression settings, render, watch... Pick some music of your choice, convert it to .wav, clip it the right size, load video and audio into VirtualDub, render, enjoy & spread it :)

Let me know how it goes (or if what I said confuses you)

How can I make the footage better?
One common problem is during varying light levels, the autoexpose or autogain control is left turned on. While fine for normal webcam usage, its better to keep a constant level so that the camera doesn't try to compensate poorly.

Usually a good one will take a several goes to capture it. Personally I find choosing the accompanying music harder ;)
